Neiman Marcus’ flyer advertising what could be considered a cross between Madame Butterfly and a problem with your Zenith T.V. (Hey, do they still make those???) Sort of that rolling horizontal line problem that existed back when……oh, nevermind.

Interestingly, Karl designed a coatdress (and FOR SEPARATE PURCHASE–silk print sundress) featured for 2001C that this look harkens back to…..of course, the ‘01C version was sold sans pailletes and was about $2800. And this is a suit. And it is three and a half times the retail price. (…and, yeah, I bought it).

As for the ‘01C ensemble–as it was shown on the runway–I found that the only Successful way to wear that coat was with THAT dress. “It” being a white elongated silk featuring a black logo abstract floral design spattered in no particular order. I state that because having seen a few of same, the random placement of the black splotches became—ahem—pretty evident. (In other words–no small printed pattern here girlfriends and well, all seemed to highlight one clearly accentuated breast and one solid) I’m sure there is some florid term for the print, but we’ll just call it ‘a la Holstein.’

Photo: Ranch Hand Karl

The point? Well, while this runway (act 2) CC suit is definitely a statement, it is also limiting. This jacket absolutely WILL NOT (sparkly fabric or no sparkly fabric) work with anything other than the skirt for which it was designed.

EXCEPT PERHAPS THE HOLSTEIN DRESS. (and, no—I parted with that little bomb a long, long time ago)

As for the featured bag–a modified Chanel jumbo classic style with silverTONE chain, cc turnlock closure and leather strap — embellished with crystals in a ‘this is your brain on drugs’ Paisley design —

I’m sure that:

a) it is at least $4-7K
b) a better bet than the suit for the outlay
c) will be copied very badly in Chinatown
d) I’ll be shot by my husband if I buy it.

Moo–your friends at YYC

Going, Going, GONE……..OH NO!

I first discovered this ‘chain’ in the basement of Harvey Nicks across from our digs (the Sheraton Park Tower, 7th floor at the time…..) in London. For whatever reason, we alternated three week periods in the U.K. at the time— and the food took about as much time to reach our room via the service trolly laden with fish ‘n’ chips as it did to cross the street for a nosh. Somehow, even at London department store prices (sssssssh: don’t tell Yo!! Sushi) we still seemed to fare better with Harvey.

We’d descend from the outside of the shop into their basement arrangement which featured dormitory lunchroom tables spanning the restaurant and a serving/cooking crew that resembled ex-roadies for the Sex Pistols after a bad night not minding the bullocks…… I’ve never seen so much body piercing….not that I hang around looking for it unbidden, but it was memorable.

The wait staff (the entire tattoo’ed handful of them) would rotate the room and scrawl your order by number on the white table mat in place before you. I normally opted for the YakiSoba or the Chili Beef Ramen. They didn’t offer soft drinks, but rather some strange fruit concoctions that usually settled in a disturbing way before arriving to the recipient. It all looked a bit like a science experiment gone awry. Nothing that I ever learned about cooking can’t be attributed to fractional distillation and a lab partner.

Outside of London and the eclectic quasi Japanese menu (and, boy, you should see my disappointment when I had the actual JAPANESE version of Yaki Soba in Nara, Japan–It is to the noodle what a slice of New York Pizza would be in Napoli……and I think my uncultured Palate prefers the adaptation.) I am not familiar with the establishment in the U.S. (but I did buy their cookbook through Barnes and Nobel online.)

FYI (yeah, you’re all hanging in there with bated breath): Wagamama translated from the ‘Nihongo’ means Selfish…sort of ‘I want it the way that I want it.’ Works for me.

I never really felt comfortable enough with the ‘Johnny Rottens’ to actually demand more than a fork, but Wagamama it was.

After about two years (and enough consumed noodles to probably by rights own part of the stock in the company as it is….) I shuffled my business to play the currency exchange, and I next found myself taking slightly longer junkets to the Pacific Rim vs. Europe—- first stop Sydney.

My son who had grooved to a couple solid years of Chili Beef Ramen at this point was downright buoyant as he spied a Wagamama outpost on George Street en route to our hotel. That pretty much sewed up our nightly dinner requirements while ‘down under’…….(Lucky us….He also found that they sponsor a cafe style venue at the Airport.)

As I type this with nostalgia, I’m starting to wonder if I should buy Wagamamas (did I buy Wagamamas?). That could solve a lot of my Tokyo dining dilemmas……but, no. We’ll just stick with the shirts.

photo: Wagamama

At the end of the day, they both offer the same existentialism. It’s just, well, I’d rather sleep with Ange.

Okay, I watched Inception (twice–through no fault of my own.) Happily, it made more sense to me than Shutter Island.

No, I’m not a DiCaprio fan–although I did see him sitting on the steps of the St. Regis NY in a ball cap smoking a cigarette. It made me wanna go get a pirated copy of ‘The Titanic’ to see if he’d autograph it…..but, that said, for some reason the only films that I (up to Salt—maybe WHY I liked Ms. Jolie so much in comparison) was invited to attend were both Leo’s.

Anyway, I know scores of sites or blog commentaries exist to sort out the mystery that is Inception. I think Mr. Knight just needed to panel his rec room. (Spinning tops aside)

OR NOT

Salt? Hey….where’s Pepa. ha, ha. I enjoyed that. I heard that it was initially a role intended for/by/with Tom Cruise. Definitely a Star vehicle. It barely carried itself with the cast that it had. More of a high carb/calorie treat with less nutrition than ‘Inception’…but, as Dr. Weston says ‘Sometimes you just want a Happy Meal’. THE END

Well, I think it’s really ‘charming’ that this poor steward got his knickers in a twist. Jet Blue spared no expense in hiring the cool collected type that I know I’d want at the helm in an aeronautical emergency.

Oh–I’ve heard the testimony of other crew members as well as senior staff at Jet Blue Airlines sing the praises of Mr. Slater. They applauded his dedication and courtesy in the face of even the most demanding passenger insisting on that one more bag of peanuts. Almost unanimously they agreed that he had just been pushed too darned far.

Certainly opening the air chute and grabbing a beer on the slide down was a move of Finesse. It takes years of training (or a heck of a lot of trips to a water park) to get the hang of that maneuver….especially with a six pack in toe.

Okay, Has anyone ever seen footage–old film perhaps– of travel in the good old days (in this case, even into the early eighties)? The stewardesses (and damn, they liked being called that….) were actually attractive enough that I (hey, I’m a chick) would look twice. I mean the last crew on a flight that I flew domestically had women that looked like THEY could use a shave at the end of five hours. Boy, the good ‘ole days….Flight attendants ACTUALLY ATTENDED the flights. Hummmmmm, I mean— they would say ‘please’ and didn’t sneer indignantly at your request of sugar for your tepid cuppa.

The report is that this steward, Mr. Slater, was stressed. He demanded an apology from a passenger who cursed at him instead. Awwwww…sticks and stones. I mean he is paid for working the flight or is this some sort of occupational therapy that he’s volunteered for here…….”Stressed?” The flippin’ flight was from Pittsburgh to New York. You can barely drive from Midtown to Canal Street in rush hour in that same amount of time.

How ’bout a little of that Jet Blue spun sympathy for those of us NON UNION idiots forced to ante up for everything from Carry-On bags (That’s the ‘Spirit’) $25.00 for your overhead slot— to one piece of luggage. All for the privilege of flying hours in a seat that a yoga instructor couldn’t pose in without spraining something.

Yeah, yeah…I can understand how the guy must just be at his wits end restocking that lavatory with tissue—and those crossword/word search puzzles they all fiddle with in the galley as they eat meals compiled of anything edible that they didn’t have to part with…..are enough to make anyone violate Federal Safety Regulations.

While I find this resonant ‘esprit de corps’ quite lovely in theory, it doesn’t instill me with confidence nor does it convince me that THEY (let’s show a little solidarity….WRITE that on your facebook wall) are WELL TRAINED (much less psychologically tested) for the job at hand.

If this “steward” just can’t manage telling another passenger to ’stay seated’—– THE PRESSURE, THE PRESSURE …..(’yes, Virginia…some people actually DO remove their seatbelts when the sign IS STILL ON–Gasp), then by all means HE should do something more suited to his personality type. Maybe sand mosaics or artisan pot holders in a supportive environment.

‘bye, bye‘
