Toys In Babeland

Gotta admit that while I am a die hard Paisley fan (and no one does Paisley like Etro……)
—-I did not intend to ‘fall in love’ with an Etro handbag.
(‘yeah, yeah—we all say that….’)

Still— I couldn’t resist this rather unique printed satchel. The overall shape is reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s ‘Speedy’ Bag (read that as: stone cold design knock off)–but in true Italian style, it is very well crafted. The edging and handles are in a magenta leather. Kind of refreshing alternative to burgundy, brown, black or camel (the usual suspects).

Very whimsically—‘E-T-R-O’ is spelled out in building blocks alongside toy robots, airplanes, assorted candies—all set against that signature PAISLEY white/ecru background…in….YES, PAISLEY.

Overall, it’s a pretty good price point–$899 retail (an optional strap WOULD have been a nice touch).

I’m told that there is a (less expensive) Tote version of this particular ‘print’ available, but I have yet to see one online or in store. If they don’t sell it at Mitsukoshi or Isetan (AKA mercantile Mecca) I doubt it exists.

Ah, those background details–

Etro (est. 1968 by Gerolama ‘Gimmo’ Etro) primarily began as a fabric/textile ‘house’—but ventured into their trademark paisley leather range in 1984.

It is very much a family business. Gimmo’s grandchildren are now at the helm. Jacopo manages textiles, leather goods and the home collections, Kean is responsible for the menswear collections, Ippolito is the CEO and Veronica is responsible for the women’s collections (and fortunately for the family concern, she looks damn fine in them).
